3rd Grade celebrates Bird Day!

The third grade class has spend the past several weeks studying the markings, migration patterns, habits, and song of approximately 60 different types of birds that spend at least part of their year in our area. The students have spent a lot of time drawing many of these birds which have been displayed in our hallway.

The International Migratory Bird Day festival was held by Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge at the Tok Visitors Center this past weekend on May 16th. The third graders each prepared totems of a bird which were displayed as two totem poles in the visitors center. The students each wrote a story about their birds to display as well. On May 16th, several of the third graders showed off their totems and read their stories to the crowd who had gathered for a day of birding activity.

The students each picked their favorite bird drawing to display - these were judged by actual bird biologists according to proper coloring and shape. Kiara took third place for her drawing of the Bohemian Waxwing - she won a set of colored pencils. Kade won second place for his drawing of a Mountain Bluebird and received a set of watercolors and a tablet of watercolor paper. First place was won by Jessie who drew a Tree Swallow - she received a nice yellow pair of binoculars so that she might try some birding on her own!


The third grade class also received a beautiful set of Bushnell field binoculars, as well as a cd of bird sounds to use for further exploring the birds in our own back yard! A good time was had by all and the third graders had a lot of good bird displays to be proud of!
